Korea and India share centuries-old relationship rooted in shared history and culture. Beginning with the marriage between princess of Ayodhya and Korean King Kim Suro around 2000 years ago, the ties between our two countries have grown stronger over the years deeply influenced by the impact of Buddhism on Korean culture.
During the Korean War, India sent 627 medical personnel to help preserve peace on the Korean Peninsula and their selfless contribution stands as a powerful symbol of growing Korea-India friendship.
Korea and India established formal diplomatic relations in 1973 and since then they have developed a special partnership. We celebrated the milestone of 50 years in diplomatic ties in 2023 and look forward to celebrating 10 years of the Special Strategic Partnership in 2025.
Korea and India are both vibrant democracies and major economies, sharing the values of freedom and the rule of law. As key partners in the Indo-Pacific, we are working together to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the region. This partnership was reinforced at the 2023 G20 Summit in New Delhi, where our two leaders reaffirmed the commitment to work together on addressing global challenges.
Our trade and investment ties are strong. Korean companies are household names in India. We are working together to further boost our trade and investment ties by upgrading the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and expanding cooperation in critical and emerging technologies (CETs) such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and space exploration. With the Indian economy projected to become the world’s third largest by 2030, bilateral economic ties will grow further, driven by India’s leadership in IT, pharmaceuticals and aerospace.
On the cultural front, too, our two countries have deepened their ties with K-pop, K-movies, K-dramas, K-food captivating millions in India. Conversely, Indian culture with its Bollywood films, cuisines, and Yoga are gaining immense traction in Korea. Similarly, the educational partnership between the two countries is also expanding, with ever-growing number of Indian students pursuing studies in Korea, further cementing our mutual ties.
